April 27-28 2005: BASA volunteers drove to La Union to support the Philippine Association of School Librarians convention in RELC, Pagdalagen, San Fernando, La Union. Fr. Ted Gonzales, SJ who spearheads the BASA initiative, shared his dream about alternative leadership and readership in the Philippines to about 85 librarians representing Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The delegates had a few ideas to share about fundraising for their school libraries and networking with other librarians.
BASA compiled delegate information for a future librarian database and distributed handouts about librarians of the future (Next Generation Librarians) as well as a compilation of inspiring Filipino stories entitled Agimat ni Apo. Please
write us if you would like to receive a complimentary copy of Next Generation Librarians to share with your local public libraries.

That's me with the local kids visiting the local Knowledge Center for Women and Children, a special corner located in the public City Library of San Fernando, La Union. It's a cozy, air-conditioned little nook.

SPES interns (students participating in a nationwide project, paid to intern in government institutions) talk to Fr. Ted, SJ about initiatives they undertook during their month-long stint in La Union Provincial library. We caught them on their second to the last day! (How's that for serendipity?!) While they did a lot of things to improve the library (cataloguing books, arranging reading material and updating labels on shelves), they wished some generous donors would donate Harry Potter and Dan Brown books so that more kids would be enticed to read. BASA has gathered a complete set of Harry Potter books (Books 1-3, brand new, Book 4 - secondhand but still in good condition, through generous donors) for this library. The library is also in need of books for Law and Nursing students. Please contact us if you would like to donate these kinds of books.
